The Singapore Film Society is delighted to support this programme curated by Cinémathèque Selects, a monthly double-bill screening that profiles the boldest filmmakers and most inventive productions from Singapore’s past to its present. Focusing on diverse aspects of filmmaking, from directing to producing, scriptwriting to cinematography and art direction, the series uncovers lesser-known local productions and features significant films in Singapore’s cinematic landscape. Each film screening is accompanied by conversations with the filmmaker. A second film chosen by the filmmaker reveals his or her inspiration and influences from diverse corners of the film world.

Sound design in Singapore films has made strides in both technical polish and professional nuance in recent years. Lim Ting Li began her professional career in film audio in 2004, at a time when the local film scene saw a rejuvenation of new voices. Featuring short films ranging from experimental to those with special effects, and by filmmakers as diverse as Boo Junfeng and Ho Tze Nyen, this screening by Cinematheque Selects highlights Lim as one of the most prominent sound designers in the Singapore film industry.
The Birds (5:00pm)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
1963 / 119min / Rating TBA
A key film in Alfred Hitchcock’s eminent body of work, The Birds marries Hitchcock’s penchant for technical wizardry with deeper Freudian concerns. Based on a story by Daphne du Maurier, the film is the peak of Hitchcock’s work, preceded by some of the most significant films in cinema – Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. Constructed without the characteristic musical score of its time, The Birds relies instead on an electronic soundtrack that includes simulated bird cries and wing flaps to create valleys of tension and pastoral calm.
